Commonly known as a 'Baby Nurse', Newborn Specialists are extensively trained and experienced in all aspects of newborn baby care and parental education and support. A baby nurse helps a family with needs such as lactation consultation, aiding in developing the baby’s sleep schedules, and provide support for the care of multiples.  They are the extra set of hands families need at the crucial time after the birth of a baby.

Baby Nurses who work night shifts typically sleep in the baby's room and manage their care while the mother sleeps restfully in bed. When the baby wakes, the Baby Nurse feeds the baby or brings the baby to the mother for nursing.  After feeding, the baby is burped and changed before being settled back to sleep.  A daytime Baby Nurse provides similar care and also strives to create a nurturing, stimulating environment for your baby during waking hours.  Both day and night Baby Nurses document the baby's patterns and keep a log of sleeping, feeding and changing times to help the mother transition the baby to a regular schedule.

Salary is usually based on two factors: the amount of experience the candidate brings to the position and the number of infants involved (twins, triplets, etc.).  The average salary range for a Baby Nurse is $25 to $35 per hour depending on geographic location.  Since Baby Nurses typically work as temporary employees, they usually receive no benefits.
